Hi, I’m Shaochen!
I’m so glad you found me on your calligraphy business journey.
I started my own journey learning traditional Chinese brush calligraphy as a young girl. Little did I know that decades later, calligraphy would become my source of income!
Ok, I might have skipped a couple steps there…
In fall 2018, I picked up English calligraphy and a brush pen for the first time. I felt a sense of calm that was rare for me, working as a director at a high stress tech startup at the time.
I’d been itching to start a small business, and calligraphy opened a path towards making that dream come true. In July 2019, I finally said “what the hell” and started Monstera Gold, leaning on my business background to make my business legit, book dozens of wedding clients, hire freelancers, work at corporate events, sell at pop ups — and experiment, experiment, experiment!
My biggest struggle through it all was feeling ALONE. I’ve realized that it’s the calligraphers and vendor friends that make this journey worthwhile, so I’m doubling down on my community by helping you make money doing what you love!
My Mission:
To empower calligraphers with confidence and knowledge to build their dream businesses, raise the bar, and create more opportunities together.
Fun facts
My recurring new year’s resolution is to visit one national park each year. I’m at 18 so far!
My business name, Monstera Gold, is inspired by the jungle plant. It’s meant to evoke a sense of “earthy sophistication”.
I’m a dog mom, whiskey lover, and plant fanatic. I moved from San Francisco to Denver and I’m happiest when outdoors in sunshine!
